Dear Wellness Members:
As the weather continues to get warmer here in Ohio, people will begin to engage in more outdoor activities. People just feel better when the weather warms up and the sun is shining. Physical conditioning is an important factor in making sure you have fun and reap the benefits of being outdoors. Whether you are an experienced exerciser, or have little knowledge about how to exercise, you will learn from our upcoming workshops on strength training and aerobic conditioning.
Everyone can benefit by strength training and aerobic conditioning – let us show you how! These classes are a part of a series of workshops on
creating a wellness lifestyle. Best of all, these educational classes are
free to anyone, so feel free to bring whomever you want. Our next class will be on Wednesday, March 24th at 7pm in our office. Dr. Dean Smith will be presenting a workshop on
‘Principles of Strength Training’. This will be a hands-on workshop, so please dress comfortably.
Some of the topics that will be covered during this class include:
1. Principles of Strength Training
2. Benefits of Strength Training
3. Proper Technique
4. Safety Issues
5. Training for special populations (low back pain, neck pain,
sports, kids, elderly)
You will also receive a packet of information at the class, so you can incorporate the wellness information into your lifestyle. These classes are also a great time to ask any questions you may have. Please let us know how many people you will be bringing so we can make enough packets for everyone.
Don’t miss this opportunity to really make a change in your lifestyle and your health. We want you to live a longer and more enjoyable life.

The prudent diet - highly recommended
"A man is what he eats" (German proverb). Food provides not only the essential nutrients for life but also other bioactive compounds for the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. The results of 50 years of intensive worldwide research support the conclusion that diet is the major environmental cause of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially in genetically susceptible individuals.
A high-caloric diet, combined with limited physical activity, contributes to dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity. All these abnormalities increase the risk of CVD. Over the past few decades, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in adults, and quadrupled in teenagers in the USA.

Children's Chiropractic Care -
Wellness and Relief Care
Two types of pediatric patients are traditionally referred to a family chiropractic practice: those whose parents are looking for relief or a solution to their child's health issue; and those whose parents advocate the "wellness child." This article discusses both types of patients and corresponding chiropractic care, based on my practice experience. Both have the presence of subluxation. Thankfully, whether for relief or wellness care, many children are introduced to a family chiropractor because parents are looking for alternative choices for health care.

Aging or osteoarthritis: which is the problem?
Osteoarthritis (OA) or simply, spinal degeneration, is not an inevitable consequence of
aging (although many people believe it is), but aging-related changes in the musculoskeletal system increase the risk of developing OA if other risk factors are also present. The joint is a functioning biomechanical unit of the neuromuscular system. Factors that contribute to the development of joint pain and loss of joint function include those associated with aging, those associated with underuse or misuse of the musculoskeletal system, and those associated directly with the development of OA. Complex interactions exist among many of these factors such as strength, balance, and proprioception, which are affected by aging, underuse, and OA. Many older adults who have joint pain and loss of function do not exhibit structural changes of OA that can be detected by standard radiography. When structural damage is present, its contribution to pain and disability is not always clear. In the absence of pharmacologic agents that can prevent the progression of structural damage in OA, management of older adults who have joint pain and loss of function should focus on improving neuromuscular function and preventing further declines.
Note: Essence of Wellness is not
only engaged in research to look at factors that improve
musculoskeletal health, but we also incorporate all of the
conservative methods discussed in this article to better
improve your wellness. Come to our workshops and learn
more about these factors!!!
