Dear Wellness Members:
It has been a while since our last email newsletter and many great things have happened since then.
Dr. Jane has been busy adjusting families and promoting wellness (thanks Dr. Jane!). In addition, we now have an occupational therapist, Cindy Schneider, OTR/L, who works in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Many patients have experienced the fantastic benefits that Cindy has to offer. Cindy uses a hands-on approach utilizing Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy, Muscle Energy, Reiki and other Neural Energy Techniques. She gives instruction in self-healing programs, overall wellness, and home programs including yoga and strengthening.
We are also very proud to announce that Dr. Dean Smith has now successfully completed his Ph.D. at Miami University and will be graduating in August! His Ph.D. research looked at how people coordinate their joints during upright posture. Starting immediately, Dr. Dean will be accepting new patients in the office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons
(4-7pm). Dr. Dean has a Master’s degree in exercise science and in addition to chiropractic, he incorporates exercise (stretching, strengthening, coordination training and rehabilitation) with his patients. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dean just give the office a call.
We are also pleased to announce that we will be offering more wellness classes in the near future and will announce them in the office and by email. If you have specific suggestions for what you’d like to hear in these classes just let any of us know.

Know anyone taking muscle relaxant medication for back pain?
If you know someone taking muscle relaxers for back pain, you will want them to read this! Physicians in the acute setting commonly prescribe muscle relaxants. The indications for use and outcomes are not clear. Use of muscle relaxants was very common among patients with acute low back pain. Muscle relaxant use was not associated with more rapid functional recovery. In fact, among patients with greater functional status impairment at baseline, muscle relaxant users had somewhat slower recovery from the episode of back pain.

Want to improve your golf game?
Let Dr. Dean show you how. He played on a golf scholarship for Miami University and he knows how to improve your game! Dr. Dean will teach you how to harness your body and spine to hit the ball further and more consistent based on your capabilities and the latest research. If you want to play golf like the pros then you need to get adjusted and exercise right like the pros do. For example, a new study shows that substantial research has indicated the beneficial effect of physical activity on physical fitness and activities of daily living in older adults, but none have investigated the effects on performance of recreational activities. This investigation studied the effect of an exercise program on fitness and golf-clubhead speed in older men. The results indicate that a strength and flexibility program can improve golf performance in older adults.

The catastrophic failures of public health
The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published last month and drawn from interviews of almost 100 000 adult Americans, confirm that more than 60% are overweight or obese. They also reveal that 39% do no physical activity in their leisure time. Still more concerning are data indicating that even young children are overweight and less active than 10 or 20 years ago. In one recent study, researchers have shown that the average waistline of children has gone up by two clothes' sizes over the past 20 years. Many reports also indicate that poor and less well educated people are disproportionately more affected than those who are better off.
