HEALTH NEWS
Back Pain – not harmless or self-limiting
Back pain affects nearly everyone. An estimated 80 percent of adults experience one or more episodes of back pain in their lifetime, and the one-year prevalence rate is approximately 15%-20%, with some estimates as high as 40%. However, some "experts" - ironically, those outside the chiropractic profession - have attempted to describe back pain as a harmless, self-limiting condition that requires only rest and time for resolution, despite evidence to the contrary.

Flu Vaccine Ineffective
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that this year’s flu vaccine had “no or low effectiveness” against influenza or influenza-like illness. Depending on how the data were analyzed, the vaccine protected from zero percent to 14 percent of study participants.

Children, Fast Foods and Obesity
The results of two new studies provide more proof that eating fast food is directly linked to overweight and obesity. The studies show that significantly more American teenagers are overweight or obese compared to teenagers in Europe and Israel - perhaps because nearly one-third of all American children eat fast food in an average day.

Omega-3 Fats – The Good Fat

Pediatricians Say No To Soda
(What took them so long?)
The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) has issued a statement saying that eliminating soft drinks from the nation’s schools would help to reduce tooth decay and obesity, along with improving the health of children.
Nearly half of all U.S. children are overweight or obese due to the intake of fats and sugars, which accounts for 40 percent of the average child’s daily energy intake. The sweetened drinks, such as soda, which are found in many schools vending machines, are the primary source of the added sugar.
In a previous
newsletter Dr. Dean wrote on the evidence that showed an association between soda consumption and increased fracture
risk in teenage girls.
