Dear Wellness Members:
On August 23rd, Dr. Dean was invited to speak at the brand new Preble County Educational Service Center to about 75 people who provide services for Preble County including bus drivers, secretaries and administrators. The topic for the day was how to apply ergonomic principles to prevent injury in the workplace and at home. Specifically, Dr. Dean spoke about risk factors for injury as well as how to lift correctly and how to protect your back. The goal of the class was to teach people how the back works and how the back becomes injured and then to apply evidence-based prevention principles to everyday settings. The class was a
great success and many were interested in obtaining even more personalized instruction. Dr. Dean will also be speaking to the staff of the Preble County Council on Aging on September 9th regarding the same issues.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, Weight Gain, Type 2 Diabetes in
Women
Sugar-sweetened beverages like soft drinks and fruit punches contain large amounts of readily absorbable sugars. Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a greater magnitude of weight gain and an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes in women, possibly by providing excessive calories and large amounts of rapidly absorbable sugars.

Ever slump at your computer or
TV? Well listen to this...
Slumping in front of the television or computer could deactivate muscles that support and protect your spine, triggering many otherwise inexplicable cases of lower back pain.
Evidence suggests that chiropractic adjustments can help to
strengthen muscles. Also, let us show you exercises that
lead to improved coordination and stability of these
muscles. Let's get those muscles re-activated.

Parental perceptions of manual
therapy in children with cerebral palsy.
Fifty children were involved in a randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of either osteopathic manipulation or acupuncture as a 6-month therapeutic adjunct for children with spastic cerebral palsy. Ninety-six percent (48 of 50) of the parents reported some improvement while their child was receiving treatments but the gains varied from child to child. The most frequent gains were seen in improvement in the use of arms or legs (61% and 68%) and more restful sleep (39% and 68%) in the osteopathic and the acupuncture groups, respectively.

Think of
your spine care only for pain? A new study shows improved prenatal
outcomes.
Most people that have been under chiropractic care for a while
realize a host of benefits other than pain relief from getting
adjusted. In fact, this is why Dr. Dean went back to get
his Ph.D. He noticed that after several weeks to months
of adjustments, many other conditions such as ulcers, athletic/sport performance,
asthma, pulmonary function, immune function, colic and even
vision improved. A new study shows more benefits of
conservative spine care for pregnancy. The use of manual therapy during pregnancy has a long tradition. A recent retrospective study was designed to compare a group of women who received prenatal osteopathic
manipulation (similar to an adjustment) with a matched group that did not receive
this spine care. The study found evidence of improved outcomes in labor and delivery for women who received prenatal
spine care, compared with women who did
not.
